Archbishop celebrates Adam Peaty’s Rio Olympic gold

From the moment that he knocked an astonishing 0.37sec off his own world record in the heats, it was clear that everyone else was fighting over second place.

And just minutes later, Jazz Carlin won silver in the women’s 400m freestyle.

“It’s going to be good to go back to Repton, go back to Loughborough and pick up on those areas we can improve”.

“I look at those flags and seeing those colours means so much to me”.

He is the first swimmer ever to win both sprint breaststroke events at the same World championships, and the most successful British swimmer in a single World Championship. Peaty is from Uttoxeter and lives with his parents.

Her only goal was to get more followers than Caroline. She didn’t have to get me pumped up because I knew this arena would be absolutely ideal for me.

Mavis revealed Peaty – already the world, European and Commonwealth champion – had not always been a natural in the pool.

Adam Peaty smashed his own world record for the second time in two days on Sunday to win 100 metres breaststroke gold and become the first British male swimmer in 28 years to win an Olympic title.

And he went quicker still in surging to a supreme victory.

The 21-year-old finished a remarkable 1.56 seconds ahead of second-placed South African defending champion Cameron van der Burgh.

Peaty’s triumph was swiftly followed by Carlin’s fine silver.

The Daily Mail reported that Peaty does the routine “in sets of 20 three or four times a day”.

“London was so much to me”.

He said: “She is one of the best coaches in the world, not just because she sends me up and down the pool each day, but she understands every athlete, she understands their needs and their character”. If we’re not doing that I don’t really see the point. My stroke felt absolutely wonderful tonight and I just kept pumping it through.

“But I knew I was going to go in and give it absolutely everything and to put myself in the race first instead of always trailing behind, trying to catch up meters”. I can’t believe it, I am so happy.

Adam’s nan Mavis was watching from Staffordshire (she probably didn’t get much sleep last night).

Already the World, European and Commonwealth champion in the event, Peaty gave notice of his form on Saturday by taking nearly four tenths off the world record he already held.
