With temperatures also set to drop to -10, the cold weather is expected to hit Scotland on Monday before spreading to England.
“An active, showery frontal zone will move across Northern Ireland during Thursday evening to then affect parts of Scotland, England and Wales during the early hours of Friday onwards into Friday morning”.
Met Office forecaster Emma Shaples told Metro.co.uk: ‘Scotland has already seen some snow on the higher ground.
“Showers are increasingly likely to fall as sleet or snow to low levels across the north of the UK”.
It will bring the mild weather to an abrupt halt – with bitter winds and wintry showers nudging further south through next week.
“There will be a break in the rain, which will be replaced with colder weather with snow and ice as cold air from Scandinavia blows across the country”.
A warning has been issued by the Met Office for snowfall tonight (Thursday).
Snow ends Sunday morning, except in the snow-belt areas of northern in, which continue to receive lake-effect snow.
“January is going to be notably colder than December with snow at times for Scotland and the north with intervals of rain and strong winds”.
Overnight temperatures could hit -4C in some areas.
