Are James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ sequels still a big deal?
With the news that the release of Star Wars Episode 8 was moving back to December 2017, the likelihood of James Cameron’s Avatar 2 also debuting that month was immediately thrown into doubt.

As it turns out, “Avatar 2’s” tentative release date of December 2017 was extremely tentative. It was marked as a big move since people figured it would be squaring off against “Avatar 2” in 2017.
The first follow-up to the massively popular 2009 sci-fi fantasy flick was initially slated for a Christmas 2016 release, with two additional sequels planned for Christmas 2018 and 2019.
“Avatar” is expected to launch into a 4-movie franchise, with the original standing on its own and the following three being shot simultaneously to tell one coherent story.
Thus, the strength of the “Avatar” sequels will rest on Cameron’s shoulders, which isn’t necessarily a bad place to be. Avatar 2, James Cameron’s mysterious sequel to the highest grossing movie of all-time, was also supposed to come out in December 2017, but according to the Wrap, the film “will not be ready in time for its planned Christmas 2017 release via Twentieth Century Fox”. Unfortunately, it seems now that the director spoke too soon as the film has reportedly been delayed once again to a yet undisclosed date.
“I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart”, he said at the time. But “Star Wars”, Marvel and Warner Bros. are set to rule the movie world over the next several years with major franchises, which could leave Cameron and his labor of love in the dust.

“Avatar” now holds strong at the top of the worldwide box office, but “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is the latest blockbuster to make a run at the top.
