Area cancer survivors celebrate

Sunday at HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, almost 80 people attended their 22nd Annual Cancer Survivors Day, with a 1950’s flare.

Sunday morning, the annual National Cancer Survivors Day Breakfast was once again held at Hart’s Hill Inn in Whitesboro. “Anytime passed that, that you can celebrate with them and the families is very important”, said Carrie Lee, RN, Genesis Cancer Care Center. The celebration, in its fifth year, offered lunch, massages, vehicle washes and a variety of activities for cancer survivors and their families Sunday.

It is estimated that more than 14 million people living in the US have survived a form of cancer, and that number is expected to increase to 19 million by 2024.

The event is meant to celebrate the journey cancer patient’s went through. See here for more detail.

“People who haven’t had it don’t understand it”, he said.

This was the second year for the event, but organizers plan to continue it every year.

“It’s better than just sitting your auto and crying”.

“It encourages other people who are taking this on”.
