Customers and employees at Twelve Oaks Mall in Novi were told to leave the indoor shopping center.

According to police, the three men entered Tapper’s Jewelry around 5:30 p.m. Saturday and smashed a display case with a small hammer.

“It is believed the noise from the smashing glass was possibly perceived as shots fired with three suspects fleeing”, Walsh stated in a press release.

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said that the suspect had arrived with a family member Monday night at the 6th Precinct, on the city’s west side, and he sat and waited for Novi police to arrive. He is expected to be arraigned on charges Thursday. His bond was set at $300,000, no ten percent. But when Novi officers went to pick the man up, he assaulted one of the officers and kicked out two windows in the police cruiser.

Daytime robberies using hammers in jewelry stores are not unfamiliar to MI law enforcement agencies.

He was among 36 people from the Metro Detroit involved in these robberies, using sledgehammers to smash display jewelry display cases during store hours.

The robbery prompted chaos and confusion when investigators say shoppers mistook the sound of breaking glass for gunshots.
