BUENOS AIRES-Mauricio Macri was sworn in Thursday as Argentina’s president, vowing to end an era of combative politics and bring Argentines together even as his predecessor and many of her supporters shunned his inauguration.

During her last days of office, Kirchner has kept herself busy by making changes to next year’s budget, as well as other changes to the current office, which could potentially hurt Macri’s administration.

Macri won the presidential election last month by pledging to ease trade and currency controls and give the free market a chance after heavy state control of the economy under outgoing leader Cristina Fernandez.

In his inaugural speech, Macri is expected to call for unity and reconciliation.

“Macri has a very strong chance of settling this issue, mainly because he has the political will to do so and enjoys the trust of the markets”, said Jimena Blanco, head of Americas with global risk and strategy consultancy Maplecroft.

After receiving a ceremonial scepter and sash at the Casa Rosada, the country’s presidential palace, Macri along with his wife Juliana Awada, 41, waved to supporters from a balcony at the palace.

Official figures suggest inflation is running at almost 15% but independent analysts put it much higher, at nearly 25%.

The country defaulted on its debts a year ago for a second time in a dispute with hedge funds.

“We believe in that which we’ve attained so we must truly have a favorable approach to make sure that these matters WOn’t be ruined”, she said.

But critics say she created a tradition of handouts and clogged Latin America’s third-biggest market with interventionist policies.
