Argentine police bus crash kills 30

A bus carrying Argentine frontier police plunged off a bridge in rural northern Argentina on Monday, killing 43 people on board, a spokeswoman for the provincial governor’s office told CNN.

Officials said the bus fell about 20 meters, or 65 feet.

For the Reuters news agency, Walter Bianchi is keeping tabs on the news as it unfolds.

Local television images showed rescue crews working around the overturned bus, which authorities said was carrying around 60 people.

The bus was taking at least 50 individuals, a lot of them members of Argentina’s border authorities, when it came off the trail and fell about 15m (50ft) down a ravine.

The officers were being driven to the province of Jujuy, which borders Bolivia. “This has been a very unfortunate tragedy so the Argentine people should be offering their condolences to these families”, Macri said.

Gustavo Solis, mayor of a town called Rosario de la Frontera, in Salta, said the road is known to be in bad condition and is avoided by locals, especially at night.

“It’s for this reason that we need to improve the roads so that this doesn’t happen keep happening”, the statement read.

Security Minister Patricia Bullrich and National Gendarmerie director Omar Ariel Kannemann were said to be heading to the scene.
