Arianna Huffington Steps Down at Huffington Post Editor-in-Chief

“I think it’s going to happen”, Showtime CEO David Nevins told a TV critics meeting Thursday.

“But I’ve made a decision to step down as HuffPost’s editor-in-chief to run my new venture, Thrive Global”, Arianna tweeted.

But others had been speculating, since Yahoo was bought by Verizon last month, that Huffington might move on for fear of HuffPost being marginalized. But the media mogul and sleep evangelist isn’t slowing down – she’s focusing her efforts on the launch of a new start-up related to health and well-being.

After co-founding the site in 2005, Huffington’s news giant quickly became one of America’s most-visited websites and led a new wave of opinion blogging, news aggregation and journalism crafted entirely for the Web. There is only one way to do it: “with your full attention and all your heart”, she wrote.

AOL’s takeover of the Huffington Post had its rocky moments, in part because of tensions between AOL Chief Executive Tim Armstrong and Huffington over issues such as allocation of resources, Reuters has reported.

Arianna Huffington is the chair, president, and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group, a nationally syndicated columnist, and author.

Arinna Huffington’s new project, Thrive Global, is expected to be launched in November.

In a press release, she noted that she chose to leave the online news organization because ‘I simply couldn’t do justice to both companies’.

She said she would be stepping down as editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post, which now operates in 10 languages and has a user base of over 200 million.

The Huffington Post, which has yet to turn a profit for AOL, has more than 100-million unique visitors per month.

“Change is desperately needed if another generation is to avoid the burnout that all too often comes with success today”, she said in the statement. But rumors swirled about her role after AOL was sold to Verizon a year ago for $4.4 billion.

Last year, Huffington published a book titled “Thrive“, covering themes similar to the mission of her new startup.

“Since publishing Thrive and then The Sleep Revolution, I’ve dreamt of taking the next big step to help transform the way we work and live”, Huffington said. It bought AOL, Huffington Posts owner since 2011, last year. Set to launch after the United States presidential election in November, it will bring together experts from fields including neuroscience, psychology, sleep and others to provide seminars, e-courses and coaching.

In addition to aggregating news, the Huffington Post features original reporting.

“I thought Huff Post would be my last act,” Arianna Huffington said in a tweet Thursday. “But I’ve decided to step down as HuffPost’s editor-in-chief to run my new venture Thrive Global.”
