Actors Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Sofia Vergara, creator/producer Steven Levitan, actors Sarah Hyland, Ty Burrell, Nolan Gould, Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen, Rico Rodriguez, Ed O’Neill and Ariel Winter, winners of the Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy award for “Modern Family” pose for a portrait backstage at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 15, 2012 in Beverly Hills, California.
“They’re young and in love…Julie gets it, but she asked Ariel not to do anything rash”.
Ariel – who joins Ferne McCann in a long list of celebs who’ve spoken out on body shaming – added: “It sickens me to think at 17 years old, a photo of myself with my nieces is suggesting that I’m “asking for it”.
Winter admitted that she tries not to dignify mean Internet comments, but wanted to stand up for other girls who face similar bullying.
“You are not asking for anything because of what you are wearing- you are expressing yourself and don’t you ever think you deserve the negativity as the effect to what you are wearing”.
A few users deemed her choice of swimwear to be inappropriate and accused the teenager of “asking for it” by sharing the image. “Us girls have to stick together!!!!!!”
Another person wrote: “A 17 year old is not a child”.
Ariel, who plays Alex Dunphy in the hit show, was quick to respond to the abuse. It started to hurt so bad that I couldn’t take the pain.
“I could post a photo where I feel good, and 500 people will comment about how fat I am and that I’m disgusting”, she told Glamour at the time.
