Arizona 44, Oregon State 7

At the time, what is now known as the Pac-12 Conference was the Pacific Coast Conference. The ‘Cats hadn’t beaten the Beavers in Tucson since 1997, and had only 2 wins in the last 12 meetings.

-Freshman RB Deltron Sands, who had six carries for 23 yards in the first three games, has been ruled out for the season with an undisclosed injury.

The true freshman had three touchdowns, from 1, 2 and 6 yards out, respectively.

But coach Gary Andersen and his staff knew they were inheriting a rebuilding project, and that’s exactly what has transpired.

Arizona wide receiver Nate Phillips, left, runs the ball against… Still, head coach Jeremy Gunn was pleased with his side’s play in its second conference matchup.

It was also just the beginning, as there would be more defensive miscues that contributed directly to Arizona scores.

The Wildcats did pretty much everything they wanted when their offense was on the field. The offense sputtered at times but the defense came through to finish off the Bruins.

IT AIN’T EASY ON THIRD DOWN: The Beavers have stifled their opposition this season.

But in the meantime, Arizona lost two starting linebackers to injury in Scooby Wright and Derrick Turituri and lost another starter before the season in Cody Ippolito. For more information go to page 13 of these notes. Oregon was embarrassed and relegated to the “Unsullied” (See Game Of Thrones) by a good but not great Utah team.

Kevin Hogan threw for 217 yards and two touchdowns to help the Cardinal (4-1, 3-0 Pac-12) win their fourth straight after an opening loss to Northwestern.

The Beavers gave up 644 yards to the Wildcats, while only gaining 249 themselves. He joins Jacquizz Rodgers (2008-10) as the only other 2,000 x 1,000 player in OSU history.

Beyond the boxscore: Wildcats end quarter with 140 yards rushing.

Here are a few things to watch when Oregon State plays Arizona in Tucson. Collins upped his team-leading rushing total to 362 yards. “We thought we would go out and play harder than them”.

Solomon, a 6-2, 205-pound sophomore who threw for 3,793 yards and 28 touchdowns a year ago, suffered a concussion against UCLA and sat out the Stanford affair. Only 1 went longer than 39 yards. His success there led him to transfer to Oregon State as a walk-on and he quickly showed himself as a player of promise, earning the nickel back spot in spring drills.

Oregon State quarterback Seth Collins (4) runs the football against… The game was already out of hand before that possession, but a more methodical drive (by Arizona’s quick-strike standards) like that just asserted the Wildcats’ dominance. Both matches were tight, and Stanford played from behind in each of them. And they’ll have to contain athletic rookie QB Seth Collins and 6-5 WR Jordan Villamin, who has scored in three of his four games. The Cardinal continue to tour the Pac-12 over the next two months, taking on the nation’s elite teams. This season, the Beavers have a group of linemen that started the final four games of 2014 together – Sean Harlow (LT), Fred Lauina (LG), Josh Mitchell (C), Gavin Andrews (RG) and Dustin Stanton (RT).

-RB/TE Ryan Nall has been making significant strides wherever the Beavers use him. Stanford last opened Pac-12 play with three wins in 2012. Juniors K Ian Crist and TE Brent VanderVeen and sophomore LB Manase Hungalu and CB Charles Okonkwo also have made their OSU debuts. The Beavers need to get Storm Barrs-Woods going.

Stanford looks to extend its flawless 61-0 record all-time against Oregon State. They didn’t even come close.

But the defense alone can not bring the Bears a victory, especially against a fellow Pac-12 team. The Beavers are hitting just. That math computes to completing only 34% of the passes on the game.

Yes, it was Oregon State, 1 of the conference’s lightweights. The only remaining road games are at Washington State and Colorado.
