Tyrann Mathieu is the best free safety in the National Football League, at least according to the initial Madden ’17 rankings.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $62.5 million over five years and includes $40 million guaranteed. Mathieu had one year remaining on his original contract with the team before the team locked him in for the foreseeable future. After signing his contract, Mathieu’s response was simple and to the point. However, both Mathieu and the team are confident he will recover from his latest ailment and return to the form that led to his first Pro Bowl selection in 2015.

Mathieu has been one of the NFL’s top defenders, but he also tore his right ACL with two games left last season and his left ACL during the 2013 season.

That equates to an average annual value of more than $12 million. His pick-six against the San Francisco 49ers marked Mathieu’s first career touchdown as a pro.
