Arizona football releases uniforms honoring USS Arizona

Arizona will honor the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor before Saturday’s game and again during halftime.2. Even the color scheme itself is based on the ship, with the red trousers leading up to the white tops.

The helmet is an old-school block “A” inspired by the football jersey in the U.S.S. Arizona team photo.

The white-shaded helmets are the colors of the upper-mast of the battleship, the white jerseys the color of the hull and the red trousers that of the U.S.S. Arizona’s keel.

Brandon Dawkins made his first career start last week in place of injured quarterback Anu Solomon, and the Arizona sophomore may need to step up again when the Wildcats host Hawaii on Saturday. The plate on the front of the helmet will display the date of the attack, ’12-7-41.’ On the back, a bell sticker will represent the bell on the U.S.S. Arizona that can now be heard ringing throughout the UA campus.

All of the jerseys will say “U.S.S. Arizona’ on the front with a “BB-39″ where names usually appear on the back”. The U.S.S. Arizona had a gray hull and red keel. On the right shoulder, the jersey will include a patch of the 47th Pursuit Squadron, in honor of the group shooting down eight enemy aircraft.

The USS Arizona lost 1,177 people during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, and the ship remains underwater to this day as part of the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii. On the other shoulder is a 48-star flag (Arizona is state 48).

In addition, the Wildcats will honor U.S.S. Arizona survivor Lauren Bruner during the national anthem, which will be performed by a UA ROTC cadet and will include a skydiver.
