Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio to speak at GOP convention
Arpaio, a staunch supporter of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, delivered a speech Thursday night at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. “Donald Trump will build the wall”, Arpaio said, “and prevent drugs and illegal immigrants from entering our country”.

Trump, he added, “is the only candidate for president that’s willing to get tough in order to protect America”, particularly when it comes to immigration policy. “But my most important mission has just begun, to help elect Donald Trump president of the United States”.
“We have terrorists coming over our border, infiltrating our communities and causing massive destruction and mayhem”.
We have criminals penetrating our weak border security system and committing serious crimes.
Arpaio was a late addition to Thursday’s convention schedule but the six-term sheriff has been an enthusiastic Trump supporter for the past year and has regularly campaigned for the NY businessman. Arpaio has been found in civil contempt in the case, and the judge ordered an overhaul of internal affairs investigations at his department, with additional sanctions expected.
An attorney for the longtime Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will urge a judge Friday to recommend against a criminal contempt-of-court case for the lawman who ignored court orders in a racial profiling case.
Arpaio, fresh off his speech at the final night of the Republican National Convention, was stoic as his attorney pleaded for mercy.
He voluntarily gave up his last major foothold in immigration enforcement in January 2015 after the courts and federal government gradually reined in his powers.
A criminal contempt case could bring personal financial hardship to Arpaio and managers on his staff, McDonald said.
Much of the speech sounded familiar campaign themes for Trump, who outlasted a field of 16 Republican challengers to win the nomination, but it won raves from members of the Arizona delegation who were in the sea of red, white and blue. At that point, Snow interrupted and told lawyers for Arpaio and Sheridan that their clients had been dishonest on the witness stand at contempt hearings previous year.
Snow “gave them every opportunity today: ‘Convince me they didn’t lie, ‘” Wilcox said.

The judge held Arpaio in civil contempt and is considering whether to recommend criminal contempt charges against the 84-year-old sheriff. “It’s been there on and on and on”.
