The October unemployment rate was down from 6.5 percent in September, posting its lowest level since April 2008, according to figures from the state Employment Development Department.
Merced County had an unemployment rate of 9.1 percent in October, up from a rate of 8.2 percent in September.
After two months of declines, the unemployment rate in San Diego rose last month to 5 percent, up from 4.6 percent in September but still well below the 6 percent rate of a year ago, the state Employment Development Department reported today.
Nonetheless, the October rate was well below the 8 percent unemployment rate recorded a year ago.
Nationally, unemployment rates fell in 32 states including California as employers across the country added the most jobs of any month so far this year.
The government sector added about 500 jobs for the month, most of which were in education, according to the EDD.
Benicia, with an unemployment rate of 3.5 percent, continues to lead jobless figures for the seven cities in Solano County.
The unemployment rate in Turlock for October was at 7.6 percent, up from a rate of 6.7 percent in September. “And Iowa’s financial sector has remained strong over the past 12 months and is up 2,500 jobs annually”. The US rate fell to 5.0 percent from 5.1 percent a month earlier. “Many economists agree that 3.5 percent is considered full employment”.
Other sectors with large job increases since the same time previous year were professional, scientific and technical services, along with healthcare and social assistance.
