Arkansas senators oppose taking up Garland nomination

Based on his record on the D.C. Circuit, Garland would be a reliable liberal vote for the next 15 to 20 years, giving Democratic Presidents unfettered executive authority.

“The people have already decided”, said Booker during the quorum call. “Well, they have that opportunity now”.

According to Booker, blocking the nomination will impede the governmental system now in place in America. “Now the question is will the Senate do its job?” Senate Republican leaders have vowed not to hold confirmation hearings or an up-or-down vote on any Supreme Court nominee put forward by Obama, whose term ends in January.

“During that confirmation process, he earned overwhelming bipartisan praise from senators and legal experts alike”, said Obama.

“Who the person is doesn’t really make much difference”, said Inhofe.

Toomey previously suggested that holding hearings or even meeting with a nominee would not make a difference, since his objection is not over any individual nominee but about potentially changing the court’s balance so close to a presidential election. “Judge Garland… should be afforded that same constitutional set of responsibilities”. If confirmed, he promised to bring those ideals to the Supreme Court. Scalia was known for deep conservatism.

Pat Robertson made the claim on his nationally-syndicated TV show, The 700 Club, while urging Republicans to block Barack Obama’s nomination for the Supreme Court vacancy. “There’s nothing in the Constitution that specifies the size of the Supreme Court”.

“We are seeing cracks on the Republican side”, he said. “As much as our differences matter, we have always seemed to understand that our country matters more”.

“I hate to have a visit occur or have him visit when I know it would basically be with no progress”, West Virginia Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) said.

“For those of us who are concerned about the direction of the court and wanting at least a more centrist figure than between him and somebody that President Clinton might nominate, I think the choice is clear – in a lame duck”, Flake said Wednesday after Obama named Garland.

“With Justice Scalia’s tragic passing, there is no longer a majority of support among the justices for the fundamental, individual right to own a firearm for self-defense”, said Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action.
