Armed men attack Bacha Khan University in Charsadda

Heavy firing is taking place inside the Bacha Khan University in the province’s Charsadda town, some 50 kilometres from here, local media reports said.

According to reports, the university campus and hostels are being evacuated and people from surrounding areas have been instructed to avoid coming closer to the university.

Geo TV reports that five injured have been taken out from the university. Sources add that two security guards have been injured in exchange of fire.

Two explosions were heard inside the university, a police official says.

About casualties from the attack, Fazal Raheem Marwat, vice chancellor at the university told Samaa that none of the students and teachers is injured; however, he said, four security guards have been wounded.

Meanwhile, according to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), a contingent of Pakistan army also reached the University to control the situation.

“Armed men stormed into the university premises earlythis morning”, Sardheri police officials said.

Deputy Inspector General Saeed Wazir told news agency Reuters police were now moving into the university.

“We launched an operation inside the university and are trying to rescue the students and staff of the institution”, Mr Wazir said.

The attack comes a little over a year after Taliban gunmen killed 134 students in a school in the city of Peshawar.
