Armenia to face sanctions for Eurovision flag incident

Christer Bjorkman, one of the producers of this year’s contest in Stockholm, said last month that Wogan’s “mocking” attitude led a generation of Britons to view Eurovision as irrelevant, and stopped the country sending strong acts.

One was supplied by the Armenians when singer Iveta Mukuchyan’s delegation waved the flag of Nagorno-Karabakh – the region disputed by Armenia and Azerbaijan – while waiting in the green room prior to the first semifinal (the Armenians qualified for the final).

On Sunday morning, Im will join fellow semi-final winners from Latvia, Georgia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Serbia, Poland, Israel, Lithuania and Belgium. A jury final will also take place on Friday, May 13 but this event is not televised.

Unlike last year’s Australian representative Guy Sebastian, who got a pass straight through to the big night, Im had to compete with 17 other singers for one of 10 grand final berths this morning. This has given Russia an edge over the other countries by virtue of the fact that nearly everyone here in Stockholm is talking about the Russian entry to this year’s contest and consequently it has become a so called favourite in the eyes of many people.

Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and hosts Sweden were already confirmed finalists.

“I’m really lucky, she’s been like a friend to me”. Watching her powerful performance, and bearing in mind that she could not jump around because of her baby bump, Ira concentrated on giving her all by the sheer force of her personality. She will perform in the first half of the final.

Speaking to Woman’s Day’s Executive Editor Claire Isaac, who is now in Stockholm for the global competition, Dami shared a message of thanks to all her supporters.

“When I saw all the fans singing along and waving, and everyone cheering to me, I don’t cry all that often, but I burst into tears”.

Being on stage however brought out her competitive side and help quash those nerves. Or when some people speak about the political party they support and still say “we”, even though it is becoming increasingly obvious that politicians and the voters who put them there each time are living in two very different, parallel universes where the same laws and rules don’t apply. “The naked shoot was fantastic, and I feel proud that I can shine a light on the fantastic work of Prostate Cancer UK”. “That’s the reason I think competition is good…it pushes me”.

The Brisbane-based Im is among a handful of performers tipped to do well by online polling and betting sites.

Australia has once again proved that anything Europe can do, we can also qualify for the finals for, as our nation’s one great hope for Eurovision 2016, Dami Im, has cut through the competition and made it out of the semis and into the grand final.
