Army keeps it close, but Navy wins again

Reynolds has scored all 83 of his touchdowns on the ground and needs two to break the combined FBS and FCS record for rushing TDs set by Georgia Southern’s Adrian Peterson and Towson’s Terrance West. He also needs one score to break the FBS record for total touchdowns scored, a mark he shares with former Wisconsin standout Ron Dayne and Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth Dixon, who has one game remaining.

Just hours before his Midshipmen take the field to go for a 14th straight win against Army, Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo took some time to visit the set of ESPN’s College GameDay and address the conversations connecting him to the vacancy in Provo at BYU.

Twice the Black Knights regained possession at its own 20 with under four minutes to go, but both drives ended in interceptions – one from Carter and another from DeAndre Bell on a wide receiver pass. Bell’s interception came after Army advanced past midfield, but the attempted trick play backfired as Navy’s Daiquan Thomasson made a leaping interception to seal the win. In the end, Navy and the Midshipmen sang second, sending Army home for another long, dark bus ride to West Point.

Army quarterback Chris Carter (7) throws for a touchdown during an NCAA college football game against Navy, Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, in Philadelphia. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that we’re a little frustrated. “It’s been my life” at Navy, he said. “I’ve given everything for this program”.

There’s not much that can top the spectacle of the Army Navy game.

Navy took its first lead, 7-3, on its second possession with two runs from Reynolds, including a 58-yarder for a touchdown. He rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns and threw for a score in a record-setting performance that carried the Midshipmen to a 21-17 victory over Army on a springlike day before a crowd of 69,722 at Lincoln Financial Field. Reynolds has simply been fantastic over his career and in this season in general as he narrowly missed out on the chance to get into the Heisman trophy conversation.

The Army-Navy game is one of the most storied college football games. The Mids won the CIC trophy, awarded to the team with the best record in games among the three service academies. Over the season the team has started three different quarterbacks as Ahmad Bradshaw will likely get the nod against Navy. The helmets correspond with the position of the player wearing it.

Army topped its rivals with 17 different helmets, representing the 17 branches cadets can enter after graduation.

Army got close enough for a Hail Mary pass to end the game, but it didn’t quite make it to the end zone.

Navy beat Army 21-17 for a record 14th consecutive meeting, taking advantage of four Army miscues in the fourth quarter. “We’re going to drive these young guys and wer’e going to have some really talented sophomores and juniors”.

“I’m just a product of our offense”, Reynolds said.

Navy (10-2) plays Pittsburgh (8-4) in the December 28 Military Bowl at Annapolis, Maryland.
