Around sports: McIlroy declares himself fit for PGA Championship

RORY McILROY, the world No.1, has declared himself fit enough to defend his PGA Championship title at Whistling Straits this week.

He still hasn’t said officially that he will play, perhaps waiting to test his ankle over the weekend.

The focus at the PGA Championship, especially at Whistling Straits, starts with the two players who have attracted the most attention in the major tournaments this year – Jordan Spieth because he is winning them, Dustin Johnson because he is not.

Graeme McDowell said he has been texting with McIlroy to check in on him without asking about when he will play. “At Augusta, I felt like I really played such good golf”. So many big names that can crop up, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a leaderboard like last week’s when you had five of the top seven players in the world right up there contending for the title.

Forget about the 7,790 scorecard yardage, and the 12 holes where water comes into play, and the 77.2 course rating. With that said, let’s get into the rankings for the PGA Championship.

Besides, he said his short game has remained sharp because he has been working on it all along.

The 25-year-old now flies to Wisconsin for the final major of the year, the 2015 PGA Championship at Whisling Straits Golf Club.

The 26-year-old does not have to commit to the PGA Championship, which starts on Thursday, until his official tee time for the opening round.

“I’m really not anxious about the putter change in the future”. Regardless of whose your champion, golfing fanatics will be treated to some great golf and exciting times at Whistling Straits!

“I did all my homework for the back nine there today”. Although his play of late is not what many pundits have come to expect, Spieth’s record in the Majors cannot be over looked.

“I just met Colin Montgomerie at lunch. If he can maintain it within the fairway and get off to good begin, it wouldn’t shock me in any respect if he will get in rivalry”.

“So it’s more if my left foot was to stay sort of completely flat, like roll on to the left side like a lot of guys do, then it would obviously probably create a few problems”. “I take my time….”

“But just like at the (British) Open Championship, when I get there, it’s just going to be about that tournament, and that’s all that will be on my mind … not thinking about three in a row (or) grand slam”.

Considering the first three rounds which ended with him starting the day at even par, his 4-under, 66-round for Sunday might have offered a bit of relief heading into the season’s last major.

Golf’s final major of the year is here and one of its biggest stars will indeed play. “Steve [wasn’t holding me back out of nervousness] – he was just going through all the fitness protocols and that was basically it”.

Jordan Spieth is bidding to become only the third player in history after Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods to win three majors in a calendar year, but Beem thinks any number of competitors have a realistic chance to lift the Wanamaker Trophy.
