A police official walks near where a man was beaten Friday, July 15, 2016, in San Diego.

During this afternoon’s news conference at downtown SDPD headquarters, Nisleit expanded on Zimmerman’s assurances that the right man was in custody in the case.

The suspect, Guerrero, was spotted near the scene of the attack riding a bicycle.

Last week, a South Bay transient was jailed on suspicion of committing the assaults, but was released four days later, just before he was due to make his initial court appearance in the case.

Capt. David Nisleit tells KNSD-TV (http://bit.ly/29DwrxF ) that the person was detained early Friday after a new attack on a sleeping man.

The 55-year-old victim of Friday’s attack suffered severe trauma to his upper body and was assaulted while asleep, a pattern of violence consistent with previous incidents.

Two Harbor police officers patrolling near the freeway bridge heard the homeless man’s screams as he was being attacked at “around 4:30 a.m.”, reported The Washington Post.

Police concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute him and released a new sketch of the suspected serial killer Thursday.

“We can all rest a little easier tonight knowing that this predator is in custody”, Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said after Guerrero was taken into custody. No motive has yet been determined for the grisly attacks and it is not known if Guerrero has an attorney. Following the arrest of Guerrero, Zimmerman said she believed that he “The suspect responsible for these vicious crimes”. Police said he looked strikingly similar to a man seen on a surveillance video who was buying gasoline at a Shell gas station store shortly before one attack. Earlier this year, two brothers and a female teenager were accused of fatally beating a homeless man in El Cajon after one of the brothers allegedly got into a fight with some other homeless people in the area.

The following day, Longley, 41, was found dead at a park on Bacon Street in Ocean Beach, and 61-year-old transient Manuel Mason was severely wounded near Valley View Casino Center in the Midway district, according to police. The 53-year-old died before his body was set on fire.

The spate of homicidal violence across the city has left San Diegans – particularly those who live on its urban streets – shaken and on edge since the Fourth of July weekend.
