A man and his 11-year-old son from the Austin area were among the dozens of people killed during the truck attack in Nice, France, relatives said Friday. “We’ve been working around the clock”.
Authorities in California are investigating another attack on a homeless man in San Diego.
San Diego police have detained a person in the investigation of attacks on homeless men that have left three dead.
Relatives say a father and son from the Austin area are among the victims of the deadly truck attack in Nice. A short while later the same day police found the bloodied body of another homeless man, Shawn Longley, 41.
“There is no doubt in my mind, this is part of our series”, Nisleit said.
The next day, officers responding to a 911 call found Manuel Mason, 61, who remained in critical condition Monday with injuries to his upper torso.
Officers detained the suspect after he allegedly injured the two victims, who were sleeping on the streets, in separate attacks shortly after 4am.
Investigators hope the artist’s depiction, combined with surveillance camera images of a man they believe is the killer, will prompt a tip from the public that will bring about a break in the case, which has had the city on edge since early this month.
Padgett’s “strong resemblance” to the subject in the footage, coupled with the fact that he had been convicted of committing a violent crime similar to the recent attacks, led detectives to conclude that they had good reason to jail him, Nisleit said.
The morning of July 6, 23-year-old Dionicio Vahidy was gravely injured in downtown San Diego by someone who left a towel burning on top of him. Vahidy died in a hospital four days later.
Last week, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said the suspect’s “evil acts of violence are some of the worst I’ve seen in my 34 years in law enforcement”.
The brutal attacks have chilled the homeless community in the southern Californian city and put intense pressure on police.
“It’s going to be a huge relief for the homeless”, advocacy worker Michael McConnell told the San Diego Union Tribune.

Shortly before 4 a.m., someone struck a man with an unknown object in the vicinity of 13th and A streets, then rode away on a bicycle, San Diego Police Officer Frank Cali said.
