There were no signs of trouble, unlike Tuesday, when skirmishes broke out among demonstrators and police used their bicycles to keep them apart.

The names of those arrested weren’t released, and Williams could not provide details as to whether they were Cleveland residents or from out of the area.

The four-day convention has been a challenge for police, who have arrested 22 people.

Groups included anarchists, anti-Muslim protesters and Bikers for Trump.

Several people have been arrested after burning an American flag in a protest outside the Republican National Convention.

A small group of protesters clashed briefly with police outside the Republican convention in Cleveland Wednesday afternoon after the demonstrators attempted to burn an American flag. Earlier that morning, Code Pink, a women-led anti-war group, conducted a “beauty pageant” to protest Trump’s treatment of minorities. The man assaulted the officer, and “things escalated from there”, Williams said.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said last week that he was anxious demonstrations could get out of hand.

Carl Dix, a representative of a group called the Revolutionary Communist Party, told the Herald his group inspired the flag-burning to protest a rash of officer-involved shootings of black suspects.

“We all understand it was a mistake, and they owned up to it”, Georgia delegate Donna Rowe said.

Police ordered bystanders, including the sizable number of reporters and TV cameras, to disperse, threatening to arrest anybody who ignored the order.

“I hope you all die in your sleep”, Lilly Smith shouted.

Fifteen of the 16 other people arrested were charged with a misdemeanor offense of inciting violence near the crowded Quicken Loans Arena, police said.

“I’m very happy that everything’s been so civil, despite all the shouting”, he said.

A flag-burning in the streets outside the convention on Wednesday sparked the most turbulent protests of the week and resulted in 17 arrests.

Pence said he is “absolutely confident that in the days ahead you’re going to see this party come together and present the choice to the American people”. Previously, five people had been arrested in three different incidents. “We took this action because this flag has flown over the horrific crimes of this empire”.

“I can’t speak on what might happen today”.

Police separate protesters from the crowd at downtown Cleveland’s main square. People gathered at Public Square and other locations throughout the day for a variety of causes.

The group protested Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall between the USA and Mexico.

From the perimeter to the Quicken Loan Arena, police presence is evident in nearly every roadway, alley, business and sidewalk.

Jesse Gonzalez, of Lakewood, a Cleveland suburb, carried a rifle on Public Square while wearing a camouflage-style “Make America Great Again” hat.

City officials have been hoping for a mostly trouble-free convention to help fix the reputation of the Cleveland police, who are operating under federal supervision after a U.S. Justice Department investigation found a pattern of excessive force and violations of people’s civil rights. Cleveland police indicated that two troopers were transported to MetroHealth for an unknown illness, but they do not believe it is related to the stickers.
