‘Arrow’ season 4, episode 2 review: Speedy’s crisis; Oliver’s political decision

It seems odd that this would be Laurel’s takeaway considering the effects Thea is dealing with, but Sara has a new show to star in.

By the episode’s end Oliver was firmly back in Starling City taking on the identity of Green Arrow, Felicity was continued to run Palmer Technologies, and a flashforward revealed that someone close to Oliver AND Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) would end up in a grave by the end of the season.

Laurel comes in and offers an out-of-town trip for she and Thea; Oliver kisses Thea good-bye and thanks Laurel. She says that instead of being nervous, she’s excited to be the boss. As a result, Oliver and Thea go and question a bunch of homeless people. He tells her that he’s decided he’s going to run for mayor.

At home, Oliver goes to see Felicity, who tells him she’s figured out her work problems.

At a rally for Jessica Danforth, Oliver and Thea stand in the crowd bickering.

Felicity’s start of her new job is going about as well as Jessica’s new venture. She meets Curtis Holt, an employee whose algorithm was meant to be used to get employees pay raises but was instead used to determine who would be downsized. No one, especially Curtis, is happy about it. While there Thea uses the old Arrow technique of interrogation (aka kicking the crap out of people for no reason). With Thea still reeling from her encounter with Machin, Laurel decides to make it her responsibility to help. Okay. Thea and Laurel are going to Thelma and Louise their way to Nanda Parbat with Sara in tow, Weekend at Bernie’s style? Laurel tells him she understands but she knows better than anyone this can’t end well if he keeps all to himself.

This ends with Laurel promising to take care of Thea – Oliver should be a lot more anxious about his sister, who just set a human being on fire. He releases one of her hands and makes her pinky swear she won’t tell anyone about him, and then breaks her pinkie. Felicity looks like she is about to cry.

Felicity and Curtis have another awkward conversation that gets twice as bad when Holt realizes his name is on the list of people to be fired. Curtis is seemingly the only person at Palmer Tech who isn’t a complete douchenozzle. Across town the perpetrator, who Felicity has now ID’d as a criminal named Lonnie Machin, is meeting with Damien.

Damien Darhk asks Lonnie where Madison is. At the very least, he objects to this very specific daughter kidnapping. I guess this is supposed to make us feel bad or understand Quentin, but I don’t.

On the island, Oliver pretends the man died in the landmines and turns himself into the other armed men. You know, like Oliver hasn’t been almost single-handedly saving the city and even Lance personally for years. Madison is in the midst of being tortured. Oliver asks where her daughter Madison Danforth is. Well, Oliver tries to take on Lonnie, but Thea is the one to take the guy down. Oliver manages to extinguish the fire, but he and Thea share a horrified look.

At the headquarters, Team Arrow gets intel from Felicity that could lead to Machin’s whereabouts.

Oliver kills the guard who attacked him when he landed and receives orders to infiltrate. Oliver responds that nothing worthwhile comes easy, and that they simply need time to figure out a better way. He gives him the address to where Lonnie is holding Madison. Most importantly though the dreaded wig is gone and Stephen Amell gets to use his real hair in the flashback scenes.

Back in Star City, Team Arrow continues to battle the Ghosts. He tells her that whatever she’s going through, they’ll get through it together.

Then we have a pair of a few really bad decisions. He should run for mayor. The highlight of Anarky’s involvement in this episode was the 2-on-1 fight featuring Green Arrow, Red Arrow, and Anarky himself.

“Meanwhile, Thea begins to exhibit effects from the Lazarus Pit”. Being Oliver’s sister, he is going to be very protective of her and that may either be a good or bad thing. Machin asks for a second chance and Darhk warns him that H.I.V.E. doesn’t give third chances. “What happened to Thea in Nanda Parbat?”
