Arsenal defensive duo still a doubt for Newcastle

Mertesacker has been battling a chest infection and Koscielny is sidelined with a back injury.

Wenger is not sure whether both players will be available for the upcoming matches having yet to ascertain the prognosis of the duo.

Mertesacker is still sick and Koscielny will have a test today on his back.

“After the worldwide break he can certainly come back into full training”.

That meant that Wenger had to use a makeshift pairing of Gabriel and Calum Chambers, who were bailed out by the heroics of Petr Cech behind them.

In the second half I think we should’ve won the game.

“We could not finish so we have a little deficit comparing the chances we created and our finishing qualities at the moment but that will come back”. They had a few chances and most of the second half we were in control and had a lot of chances.

Both goalkeepers shone in the draw, pulling off a series of acrobatic saves in a game which could easily have finished 3-3 but for their continued efforts to deny the likes of Christian Benteke, Philippe Coutinho and Olivier Giroud.

Wenger also delivered a pessimistic message for Arsenal fans as he clearly does not believe there will be any new signings ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

“I am always confident that a last-minute situation or solution is available, because the transfer market is especially moving in the last four or five days, ” Wenger said.

‘But at the moment I can not promise you that.

The Brazilian would likely deputise for Koscielny if the Frenchman is ruled out, although Chambers will also be called upon if Mertesacker does not recover in time.
