Arsenal star Mesut Ozil is not good enough says Collymore

Arsenal are unable to “outgun” Europe’s elite teams in the transfer market, admits the club’s chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

‘I still believe that Wenger’s team could be right in the top-four mix, I only think that will happen if they sign a boss central defender and/or a boss central striker, otherwise they could just as easily miss out, ‘ Collymore wrote in the Sunday Mirror. “We sign players because we believe they will progress us as a club”.

Mahrez may prove hard to prise away from the English Premier League champion, with the player stating over the weekend that he is “not bothered” by speculation over his future.

‘We are very active on the transfer front and if we find the right candidates we will spend the big money. We’re really disciplined about that. We have to be very disciplined about staying true to our values, staying true to the foundations of the club and making sure that we make smart decisions. We’re very focused on the future.

Mesut Ozil is unlikely to be fully fit for Arsenal’s opening Premier League game of the season against Liverpool, but that hasn’t stopped the midfielder from enjoying his time in the sun.

Wenger has already seen two leading transfer targets pass him by, with Jamie Vardy choosing to remain at Leicester in June before Gonzalo Higuain chose to leave Napoli for Juventus rather than Arsenal.

Giving another youngster an opportunity to shine is something neither Wenger nor his chief executive are averse to.

Make no mistake; the Gunners have brought in big names such as Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Petr Cech in recent years but deals seem to take that much longer for Arsenal to conclude compared to the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea.

Wenger’s policy has been one of buying talented young players and training them up to sell on at a profit years later, once they have proven themselves.
