Arsenal thrash Chelsea as United win without Rooney

The Germany worldwide was influential in the Gunners’ 3-0 win over Antonio Conte’s side as goals from Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Ozil secured Arsenal’s first Premier League victory over the Blues since 2011.

Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil all got their names on the scoresheet as they comfortably cast aside their London rivals.

Arsene Wenger praised a “committed and disciplined” performance from Arsenal as they ended their league hoodoo against Chelsea with a comprehensive 3-0 win. We played with style, with pace, with movement – and that’s the kind of football we want to play.

Arsenal gave their manager Arsene Wenger something to celebrate as he marked 20 years in charge of the club, punishing Chelsea for poor defending to race into a 2-0 lead within 15 minutes.

Wenger, who confirmed midfielder Francis Coquelin suffered a recurrence of the knee injury which sidelined him previous year, insists the fire inside burns as brightly as ever even after two decades at the helm.

“It’s one of the best performances in recent years”, Wenger said of his 1,128th Arsenal game.

“After today we are thinking we must work a lot because we are a great team only on paper”, Conte said.

I was a footballer and it happens that in one game you don’t have a good performance for many reasons, but I hope to improve this situation.

“It’s one of those moments in your life as a manager where you think “today is a great day”, Wenger said.

The defeat left Antonio Conte without a win in three Premier League matches and with his side’s early-season momentum having fizzled out.

“Would Chelsea stop our progression?”

“We must work to improve, to come back as a great team – not only on paper but on the pitch and this is important”.

“I’m hungrier because I know I don’t have 20 years in front of me”, the Frenchman said.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are still unbeaten in the Premier League, after they defeated Swansea City 3-1 at the Libery Stadium.

Wenger made 11 changes to the second-string team that had won 4-0 at Nottingham Forest in the League Cup and his big guns fired immediately, Santi Cazorla stinging Thibaut Courtois’s palms.

“It [ending the winless streak against Chelsea] was relevant for us because it helps us to win a big game”.

“I think they had an outstanding performance both of them”.

“I think I have to solve the situation”, Conte said.

The victory pushes Arsenal up to third in the table, a point behind Tottenham and five back on Manchester City. To find that balance is not always easy, but I told them the best way was to focus on the quality of the football we wanted to play and do that with belief.
