Arsenal were mentally ‘remarkable’ in Liverpool defeat – Wenger

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said his celebration with Liverpool players after their fourth goal in the 4-3 win against Arsenal “is not allowed”.

Ramsey joins a growing list of absentees at the Emirates, as Alex Iwobi was pulled off in the 59th minute of the game through a thigh injury.

“It’s a very hard situation to sort out because the players come back late because of the Euros and, on top of that, you play them and they get injured”.

“Arsenal are a top team, we’ve got a few new players in our squad, still gelling together and if we want to achieve something special this year we’re going to have to be more disciplined defensively as a unit”.

Liverpool’s first clear chance came five minutes before the break, when Roberto Firmino cut the ball back from the left for Georginio Wijnaldum to drill a shot straight at Petr Cech, after Chambers had given away possession with a sloppy pass.

“We came in after the first half knowing we could play better”, he added.

He stressed: “The game is not over unfortunately, and Arsenal were not in a good way but we gave them the path [back into the match] again”.

“We pushed players today like Ramsey”, he said.

“Can they recover for next week?”

“You have to consider, as well, that we have been unlucky with losing Mertesacker and Gabriel, and having Koscielny not fit”.

“But he needs to learn from a more experienced defender who can show him how to be a bit smarter, a bit more aware defensively. You have to sometimes accept that you can not control absolutely everything”.

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who helped Wales reach the semi-finals at Euro 2016, had to be replaced after 61 minutes with a suspected hamstring injury.

Three quickfire goals from Adam Lallana, Coutinho and Sadio Mane at the start of the second period established a three-goal advantage for Liverpool.

Substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chambers replied for Arsenal, but Liverpool gathered themselves to close out the win.

Klopp said his side had “switched off” – and that he was to blame. “If you celebrate too early, life always gives you a knock”.

While Klopp applauded the quality of his team’s attacking football, he warned that they will not achieve anything this season if they do not learn to defend more cohesively.

“We didn’t start well”.

“We were much better in the last 15 mins [of first half], then the wonderful goal of Phil”, he said.
