Arsene Wenger: Arsenal criticism hurt but players passed ‘mental test’

The Gunners had failed to secure a win in their last three Premier League matches, and being knocked-out of two competitions in a row has raised questions over their ability to be champions.

“I never complain about critics, especially when they are turned against me”.

An early goal from Danny Welbeck started things off and teenage talent Alex Iwobi scored just before the break to repay the faith Wenger had shown in him.

“Mathematically we have a chance and a game in hand at home”.

“I wouldn’t like to say it’s the fault of TV if we go out, I don’t believe that at all”.

“We are ready for a battle, for a fight, and just continue to put in the quality of performances that we have put in today.”

Iwobi wasted a gilt-edged chance by shooting straight at Robles and Sanchez had a strong penalty appeal turned down before Arsenal made it 2-0 by exposing Everton’s creaking defense.

Arsenal looked risky every time it got in behind Everton’s midfield, which happened regularly in the first half.

Sanchez has now revealed the Arsenal manager often tries to slow him down, but he refuses to comply with the Frenchman because of his passion for the game.

“He is 19 years old and has been at our club since the age of eight”. “Month after month, he developed very well and that is why I integrated him and played him”.

“He’s a very bright boy, very team-orientated and understands the game very quickly”.

Everton have now conceded 28 goals in the league at home, the most since the 1993-94 season when they escaped relegation on the final day of the campaign reports the Liverpool Echo. It was probably the most impressive Premier League debut at Goodison Park since Wayne Rooney.

Wenger said: “You know how tricky every game is in the Premier League but we will bet on our consistency and hope we have some luck with other results”.

“Today was a one-off”, Martinez said. “We are generally not winning enough games”. It’s not too bad, but it’s not an excuse because we dealt with it before.
