Arsene Wenger relieved as late penalty lets Arsenal off the hook

“It is a win after Watford and, if you can put a few wins together like we have, we will be more confident”.

Wenger said he had not seen television replays of the incident, but his players had told him it was “100 percent a penalty”.

Arsenal found themselves behind on 18 minutes, after a Dusan Tadic free-kick hit the crossbar before rebounding in off the unfortunate Petr Cech.

“When you lose the first home game you can not afford to drop points in the second”.

Southampton manager Claude Puel was disappointed his side conceded so late in the game after taking the lead in the first half.

“The boys are short of competition and were surprised by the pace and commitment of the Premier League”.

“As well, they were a bit on their nerves in the first half”.

The breakthrough came at the death after Jose Fonte was penalised for tangling with Olivier Giroud in the box, with the Portugal defender becoming the latest player to be punished for holding in the penalty area in light of stricter Premier League directives this season.

New-signings Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez both made their debuts for Arsenal on Saturday against Southampton.

“We played with good possibilities, we scored”.

While Arsenal are now sixth in the table, Southampton are in the relegation zone with just two points from four games, but Puel refused to be downbeat. Indeed, after the game, Fonte was less than impressed by the penalty decision…

“We had good spells with a good 30 minutes and we faded a little where we took our foot off the gas, but we were always in the game and looked like we were going to score”. Perhaps at the end of the first half we dropped back, but it was a good game and my players have been bright.

And on the German, “Mustafi has only played one half since the start of the season with Valencia, so they are missing games”.
