Arson suspected in fire at Clinton’s early childhood home
He touted his roots in Hope in southwestern Arkansas, where his mother, Virginia Clinton Kelley, had lived before Clinton’s father, William Blythe Jr., died three months before the future president was born.

An early morning fire at Bill Clinton’s birthplace is being investigated as arson. The house was owned by Clinton’s grandparents and even after he moved, Clinton spent many of his childhood summers and holidays there, according to the Clinton Childhood Museum’s website. Hope Police Chief J.R. Wilson told reporters that the fire is under investigation, but arson is suspected.
“There’s just evidence and signs that we do believe it was intentionally set”, Glanton said. “It will be investigated and handled as a potential arson fire”.
The building, which is designated a National Historic Site, was heavily damaged. The blaze also caused smoke and water damage to the interior.
But having arrived shortly after the calls came in, Potter was able to see the letter X had been spray painted twice on one of the doors, and some kind of object or design was painted below them that she said, “Made no sense”.
“The damage is minimal and repairable, and the structure is sound”, Wilson said.
It’s maintained by the national parks service. “It’s got a lot of historical value to it, and… we really want to protect it and do the best job that we can do”.

While the site is known as Clinton’s birthplace, it’s actually his first home.
