As cancer treatment begins, Carter to scale back on work

At a news conference, he said that he will be undergoing radiation treatments and injections to fight the cancer. Jibbari says it can be a challenging type of cancer to treat. When the couple is in Plains, Carter frequently teaches a Sunday School class before services at Maranatha Baptist Church.

Doctors at Emory University in Atlanta had removed what Carter described as about a tenth of his liver in an operation earlier this month.

After losing re-election to Republican Ronald Reagan, he went on to champion wide-ranging global humanitarian efforts.

Mr Carter’s failure to secure their release, compounded by a failed military rescue attempt, would dog his presidency and scuttle his bid for a second term.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and founding the nonprofit Carter Centre in his home state of Georgia.

President Carter delayed his livery surgery so he could finish a book tour and allow his doctor to take a vacation, but now with the discovery of the cancer in his brain, the former president said he will now follow the advice of the doctors so he can prolong his life as long as possible.

The Carter Center had said in a statement that Carter’s prognosis, when he underwent the surgery, was “excellent”.

So it was sad to hear Carter announce this week that he’s battling cancer that has spread to his brain and, at the same time, impressive to listen to him talk with such equanimity about his circumstances. He would like to do this, but needs to consider his treatment options first. “They are brain metastasis meaning they are cancers that start elsewhere and eventually spread to the brain”, he said. He will also continue doing some work with the Carter Center, which is something he had spoken about scaling back on since his 80 birthday 11 years ago, according to the National Journal. That’s been a top priority for my foreign policy projects for the last 30 years.

Fortunately, he also relates that the pain has only been “very slight” and he shares that he has not experienced any weakness or debility. “It’s in God’s hands”.

“I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t go into an attitude of despair or anger or anything like that”. “It tends to be more resistant to conventional treatments such as lower doses of radiation and traditional chemotherapy”, he said.

Carter says a tumor showed up in an MRI after he sought treatment at Emory hospital in Atlanta. He says he first felt sick whereas he was in Guyana in Might to watch an election.

Ahead of a news conference for Jimmy Carter to publicly discuss his recent cancer diagnosis for the first time, his family has gathered and a single chair is placed behind a cloth-covered table, presumably for the former president to give his remarks.

Jonathan Reckford, Habitat’s chief executive, told our AJC colleague Shelia Poole that Carter’s discussion was an “extraordinary example of grace and transparency”.
