The Bears lost their third straight game last week, falling to the Minnesota Vikings, 38-17.
Chicago could theoretically line Jeffery up alongside promising rookie Kevin White (who has not appeared in a game this season with his own injury) next year.
There are six guys in the Bears locker room who were here when Smith coached the Bears was, Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Alshon Jeffery, Robbie Gould, Shea McClellin and Sherrick McManis. For as talented as Jeffery is, the Bears need a primary wide receiver that they can depend on.
But it’s not Winston’s 20 touchdown passes and 3,422 yards against 12 picks that should worry the Bears the most. With nothing left to play for and free agency looming, it’s possible Jeffery has played his last snap as a Bear.
The Bears are already without tight end Martellus Bennett (injured reserve).
On the season, Royal has 217 receiving yards and 1 receiving touchdown on 32 receptions. Chicago looks like a team ready for golf season.
