Sindhu, who hails from Hyderabad, has been associated with BPCL ever since she was 14 years old and joined the company in July 2013. Congratulating Sindhu for bagging the silver medal, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has also announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh, a senior official of the Public Relation department said.
Sindhu’s parents P.V. Ramana and P. Vijaya on Friday offered prayers to the family deity at Ratnalammakunta, a remote village in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.
Some asserted that she was born and brought up in Hyderabad and was a Telangana “bidda.’ The counter was that she belonged to Vijayawada and was therefore an Andhra ‘ammayi”. Besides KCR also offered the ace shuttler a government job, if she was willing to do. Of course, the largest cash reward of Rs 2.5 crore was announced for bronze medal victor Sakhi Malik who is from Haryana.
Sindhu, the two-time World championship bronze medallist, became the first Indian woman player to clinch a Silver in the Olympics and fifth woman player from India to win a medal in the quadrennial games.
The Haryana government will also give Rs 2.5 crore to Sakshi.
Sindhu has also been awarded Rs 75 lakh by her employers, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, which has also promoted her to deputy manager (sports) from assistant manager.
Last but not the least, actor Salman Khan, Indian Olympic Association’s brand ambassador, had announced Rs 1.01 lakh for each Indian athlete in Rio.
