As Patterson changed wardrobe, TCU’s Alamo Bowl momentum shifted
Apologies to anybody who stopped watching the Alamo Bowl at halftime on Saturday night when the TCU Horned Frogs were down big to the Oregon Ducks, because a blowout turned into one of the most dramatic games of the season. Then the Ducks were forced to play the entire second half without their starting quarterback and starting center, and it showed as they were held to just 18 (!!!) yards of offense the last two quarters. During the three and a half regular season games Adams sat out due to injury this year, the Ducks played downright poor football.

Helfrich, given the chance to extend a vote of confidence, didn’t commit to Pellum returning as defensive coordinator next season when asked at a pre-Alamo Bowl news conference. OR will win if Freeman gains 150-175 yards and finds the end zone.
The game wasn’t only special for Kohlhausen, who started at quarterback on two days notice.
Update: TCU stormed back from a 31-0 first half hole to force overtime via a field goal with 19 seconds left on the clock. Brandon Allen threw a touchdown pass while Alex Collins had a huge day on the ground with 185 yards and three touchdowns.
“This is a storybook ending”, Kohlhausen told the TCU radio network on the field after the game.
TCU rattled off 17 unanswered points in the third quarter and entered the final frame down just two touchdowns.
The comeback also tied for the second-largest comeback in any game between two FBS teams, trailing only a rally from 35 down by Michigan State against Northwestern in 2006. A 22-yard field goal by Jaden Oberkrom sent the game into overtime, where the teams matched scores before the night ended on another bad snap by Brenner and an incompletion.
In the first half, OR was so comically dominant that even a blocked punt at its own 2-yard line resulted in a first down after the deflection into the hands of defensive lineman DeForest Buckner, who rumbled 10 yards. Bram Kohlhausen ran for an eight-yard touchdown in the third OT, and OR couldn’t answer with the final throw being knocked away.
It took 3 overtimes to complete this game, a game in which TCU fought back from a seemingly insurmountable lead. UO mixed blitzes on long-yardage situations to pressure starter Bram Kohlhausen, who was replacing the dynamic, and suspended, Trevone Boykin.
Maybe it was the fact that Oregon’s starting quarterback got injured and didn’t play in the second half.
Earlier in that season, the last time TCU didn’t go to a bowl game, the Frogs were shut out in the first half at Oklahoma in a 20-17 loss.
“Very disappointed for our guys, not disappointed in our guys one bit”, OR coach Mark Helfrich said.
Alamo’s Jeff Lockie drove OR to a field goal that made it 31-0 at halftime, but the Ducks stalled there. As overtime began OR won the toss and opted for Defense first.

OR set a school record for most points in the first quarter of a bowl game and tied the Alamo Bowl record with 21 points in the opening quarter.
