As primary race tightens, Democrats brace for a messy winter

Almost a quarter century later, the duo is back – but not quite the same.

Their answer: very, very carefully. New Hampshire Democrats will vote on February 9.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton addresses an audience during a campaign event Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, at South Church, in Portsmouth, N.H.

It isn’t just in the vital states of Iowa and New Hampshire where Clinton’s lead is narrowing – polls are showing Sanders gaining ground nationally.

“It’s a tough call, but I guess I would take Hillary”, he added.

“One can only draw the conclusion that the Sanders campaign does not want to outline what would amount to a massive tax hike on working families”, said Jake Sullivan, Clinton’s senior policy adviser.

Sanders said that under his plan the typical family would save thousands of dollars a year in out-of-pocket health-care costs because they would no longer pay private insurance premiums, deductibles or co-payments. “They want somebody who’s willing to stand up to the billionaires and corporate power”.

“The unlimited amounts of money flooding our political system from a narrow and immensely wealthy slice of American society is the most pernicious internal peril threatening the fundamental tenets of economic, political, moral and social justice and, not least, the fairness and vibrancy of our representative democracy”, Kirk said.

“He’s a lot more obsessed with me than I am with him”, she said laughing.

Still, some of those economic achievements face a skeptical re-examination within a party that’s grown more liberal under the Obama administration.

Fallon asked if the former president watches the debates like a football coach would watch a game, standing up and criticizing the politicians’ technique. Fallon pointed out that her first appearance was the night of the second Republican debate and her most recent appearance was the night of the ninth Republican debate.

A loss in the first two states wouldn’t be a death-knell for Clinton’s White House hopes. “You really do have to work hard for it and it is the hardest job in the world so I get up every day and go right at it”, Clinton said. “But I ought to get some credit for knowing something about how to run the economy”.

If we compare where Clinton is now in the Real Clear Politics polling average, the 2016 picture and the 2008 picture aren’t really all that similar.

“Basically what he is doing is saying, ‘Hey, we need to start all over again, lets tear (Obamacare) up and replace it. Details to be forth coming, ‘” Clinton told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”.

Despite her relative slip, seven out of 10 Democratic voters think Clinton will eventually win the Democratic nomination, according to survey data from the New York Times/CBS News latest poll – and that includes Sanders supporters.

“She’s the single best change-maker I’ve ever met. Not a change-talker”, he said. “But Bernie is telling the truth about the economy”.
