Ashley Benson sparks backlash over Cecil the Lion costume

She wrote, “Help! Can’t decide on my Halloween costume this year!” “Halloween is a really tricky day and you see a few of the costumes come about and it’s nearly like desensitizing things”.

The Pretty Little Liars star posted a photo of herself in the lion onesie, and asked fans what they thought of the outfit.

The first episode in what will surely turn out to be an autumn riddled with tasteless getups is brought to us by Ashley Benson, best known for her role as “it-girl” Hanna Marin on the television series Pretty Little Liars.

After commenters questioned the sensitivity of the sexy ensemble, Benson re-uploaded the image with a new caption about “this lion costume”, omitting Cecil’s name. “What do you guys think of this cecil the lion costume?”

Is she talking about the 13-year-old lion who was killed this past summer by an American dentist?

The actress tagged Yandy, the makers of the costume, in her Instagram post. Yandy does sell a separate, scantier “Cecil the Lion” costume for $118.95, and says it will donate 20% of proceeds to a conservation organization. What’s more: Yandy’s PR reps sent out a tone-deaf release alerting the media to Benson’s Instagram, noting that the costume features “a cheeky cut back and a deluxe, faux-fur trimmed hood with lion ears”.
