Ashton Eaton says tennis is only behind decathlon in terms of athleticism
He finished third in the last event, the 1,500, to win gold from France’s Kevin Mayer on 8,834 points.

The grueling event’s second day had Eaton competing in everything from the 110-meter hurdles to the discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter race all in succession.
“If I have to run to put myself in the hospital, if I have to run that hard, that’s how hard I’ll have to run”, Eaton told NBC afterward.
Ashton Eaton, the world record holder in the Decathlon, has stated that he believes that “tennis is the next most athletic sport”, behind his own.
Bronze medallist Damian Warner of Canada, addressing the same theme, said one factor that dampened fans’ enthusiasm was that decathletes can not match the performance of those who specialise in a single event.
“That is why it’s my last Olympics”, Bolt said.
Eaton embraces his wife Brianne Theisen-Eaton immediately after winning the gold in the decathlon in Rio on Thursday.
Abughaush said: “It’s an indescribable feeling to win the first medal in the history of Jordan in all the sports”.
They met as students at the University of OR and they are one of a number of medal winning couples in Rio.
Eaton took the lead on Wednesday in the second event, the long jump, with a leap of just over 26 feet, and he never trailed after that.
Even though Bolt admitted to a sense of disappointment at his time, the manner of his victory – with the rest of the field effectively out of contention after 100m – was typically impressive.
Eaton said: “You look at 10 events, how can’t there be one stinking point in there somewhere?”
In doing so, Eaton became the first man to claim successive decathlon golds since Thompson of Great Britain – the champion in 1980 and 1984. Eaton then ended the day with a virtually uncontested season-best 46.07 400. European champion Sara Slott Peterson of Denmark took silver, and the United States picked up another bronze with Ashley Spencer storming home to finish third in personal best 53.72. That record includes six straight wins between 1932 and 1960 and historic performances from names such as Jim Thorpe, Bruce Jenner and Dan O’Brien.
Two of the most dominant athletes in the world enhanced their illustrious resumes as the track and field action continued at Rio 2016.
After an appeal, The U.S. team was granted the opportunity to re-run their race and needing to beat China’s time of 42.70 to advance, the American quartet easily did. The list includes Bob Mathias, Milt Campbell, Rafer Johnson, Bill Toomey, Bruce (now Caitlyn) Jenner, Dan O’Brien and Bryan Clay.
Eaton, who has broken the world record twice, in addition to his two Olympic golds, is considered by many to be the best ever.
