Sonowal on Friday evening had met Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah and discussed with him about the government formation too, sources said.

The BJP won Assam and made in-roads in Kerala and West Bengal in results Thursday that heartened the party after its debacle in Bihar in November. BJP has succeeded in planting the lotus in Guwahati, its first government in the northeast, while Congress has lost two more states: Kerala and Assam.

Analysts said Congress does not have a proper strategy to win states and this is crucial for it to stay in serious contention for power in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The results strengthen the BJP’s position in the run-up to Modi government’s second anniversary, reports The Times of India, and may lead to the revival of “Congress-mukt Bharat”. It suffered defeats in Assam and the southern state of Kerala.

Speaking to media persons today, BJP Manipur Pradesh legislature wing leader Kh Joykishan commended the contributions of BJP workers and supporters in toppling the Congress Government. He also said that the BJP couldn’t do much in four states except Assam shows that under Narendra Modi the party is losing its base.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi said the party will work harder till it wins the confidence and trust of people, as results of assembly elections poured in.

BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal is expected to be formally elected as the leader of the joint legislative parties, paving the way for his oath-of-office as the next Chief Minister of Assam. The fiery leader of the Trinamool Congress, Mamata Banerjee, retained control of West Bengal, and another woman leader, J. Jayalalithaa, held on to power in Tamil Nadu.

A close aide to Shah said: “We are a party committed to protecting the security of the nation at any cost”. The TMC has won 177 seats of the 294 Assembly seats in West Bengal.

PTI State BJP hails: BJP Manipur Pradesh has expressed vast satisfaction at the landslide victory scored by the party over ruling Congress party in neighbouring Assam. The BJP has invested significant political capital to make inroads into opposition strongholds, and increased its tiny seat share in West Bengal.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front defeated the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) with a clear majority, 91 seats to 48 in the 140-seat assembly.

“You must watch out – the Congress’s tail will continue to wag in some or the other part of the country; so, even when that party is completely down, it can not be ruled out”, the Sena warned.
