This project is being done in partnership with British Movietone, one of the world’s largest archives of historical newsreel footage. Last year, British Pathé added its entire 100-year library, containing over 85,000 films, to YouTube.

The archive will include coverage of major historical events like the bombing of Pearl Harbor and footage of celebrities like Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Muhammad Ali. You can now catch all of that and much more on YouTube.

The giant archive will feature videos spanning from 1895 to the present day. The videos, from AP Archive channel and British Movietone’s channel, stretch back to 1895.

“At AP we are always astonished at the sheer breadth of footage that we have access to, and the upload to YouTube means that, for the first time, the public can enjoy some of the oldest and most remarkable moments in history”.

The uploads, more than 17,000 hours of footage, are split into playlists dictated by relevant and nominal categorization.

AP will continually refresh the archives on YouTube to provide historical context for current events, according to Lindsey.
