Aston Martin Confirms Turbocharged V12 Engine

The twin-turbo V12 unit is completely new in Aston Martin’s range and will be the first of its kind for the British carmaker.

While the video doesn’t reveal much else other than the fact that Aston Martin has a new engine arriving in its lineup, the teaser’s title, “Coming 2016 – V-12 Twin Turbo”, suggests that the engine will make its debut on a new vehicle that will be introduced this year.

The teaser video confirms that the engine will have a displacement of 5.2 liters.

Previous rumours speculated a high-tune version of a Mercedes-AMG twin-turbo V8 could replace the venerable bent-twelve, (sourced through Aston Matin’s technology partnership with AMG), but now we can see – and hear – that won’t be the case.

It might look like a pretty regular DB9, but the prototype in the short clip houses an all-new engine and an all-new powertrain philosophy for Aston. After years of knocking out some of the finest naturally aspirated engines in the supercar world, Aston has joined the turbocharging fraternity. Output is rumoured to be somewhere around 500kW, making it substantially more powerful than the old 5.9-litre naturally aspirated V12 which generates up to 424kW.

The V12 engine is used in the Vanquish, Vanquish Volante, Rapide S, DB9, DB9 Volante, V12 Vantage S, V12 Vantage S Roadster, Vantage GT12 and the Vulcan.

The adage of “there’s no replacement for displacement” is becoming less and less true – but it’s somewhat true for Aston Martin.
