Before Christmas, the Queen sent a good luck message to Maj Peake in space via social media site Twitter.

NASA has confirmed that Tim Kopra and Tim Peake take part in a joint operation to replace a failed voltage regulator that affected one of the space station’s eight power channels in November.

“Prince Philip and I are pleased to transmit our best wishes to Major Timothy Peake as he joins the International Space Station in orbit”.

The astronauts will work closely together on the spacewalk and are expected to spend the coming days preparing the tools, equipment and procedures needed to perform the task.

Tim Peake comments, “I am thrilled at this opportunity for a spacewalk”. “If the spacewalk is successful, this will restore the International Space Station to 100 percent of its operational capability”. Nasa builds in a minute or two into spacewalkers’ schedules for them to acclimatise to the overwhelming experience.

The school will be able to speak with Peak as long as the ISS is in sight of its ground station.

He is ESA’s first British astronaut, the 6th British-born person to visit the International Space Station, and the 7th British-born person in space.

The pair arrived at the ISS on December 15.

For an astronaut to achieve this in the water, the natural tendency to float or sink is counteracted by weights or flotation devices.
