Astronauts needed to help get to Mars — NASA Want Ad

Only 339 people have been NASA astronauts. The new crop of astronauts will also comple commercial crew spacecraft missions, and perhaps even strap into Orion vehicle for deep space.

The annual salary for the position ranges from $66,000 to $145,000; flying experience and advanced degrees are not required for the position, nor is military experience or ideal vision, leaving open plenty of opportunity for people from all walks of life. Astronaut criteria have changed over the years, said Brian Kelly, director of flight operations at Johnson Space Center. From there, they need at least three years of professional experience in their field or the equivalent of 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time on a jet. “We want and need a diverse mix of individuals to ensure we have the best astronaut corps possible”. “Astronaut candidates must pass the NASA long-duration astronaut physical”.
