Finalists for the MVP, Cy Young, Manager of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards wereannounced earlier Tuesday evening. His 1.9 defensive wins above replacement was sixth best in the AL across all positions and ranked second among AL third baseman behind Beltre’s 2.3.
He set a new major league record with 42 defensive runs saved in 2015, a statistic which was first recorded by Baseball Info Solutions in 2003.
Rockies second baseman DJ LeMahieu, who won Gold Glove last year, did not repeat this year, although he was a finalist. The rest of the Gold Glove winners in the NL are as follows: C- Yadier Molina, 1B- Paul Goldschmidt, 2B- Dee Gordon, 3B- Nolan Arenado, SS Brandon Crawford, LF- Marte, CF- A.J. Pollock, P- Zack Greinke.
The Royals dominated the Gold Glove honors, capturing three.
Kiermaier’s 15 assists led all major league center fielders. Molina, 33, now has an opportunity to win his fourth Rawlings Platinum Glove Award, given to the top overall defensive player in the National League and American League. It’s the first time the Rangers have gone three straight years without a Gold Glove honoree since a five year stretch between third baseman Buddy Bell winning in 1984 and center fielder Gary Pettis winning in 1990. He led the AL in wins, wins above replacement, innings pitched and WHIP while finishing second in ERA, hits per nine innings and home runs per nine innings. Second baseman Ian Kinsler and right fielder J.D. Martinez were nominated at their respective positions, but Cespedes was the team’s lone victor.
