Right-hander Al Alburquerque (2-0) earned the win for Detroit while right-hander Neftali Feliz tallied his seventh save and first with the Tigers despite allowing the Astros (63-54) to muster consecutive two-out hits in the 11th. Houston is struggling with its offense and is averaging 2.3 runs in its last seven games, highlighted by a 5-1 win in Friday’s opener. Alfredo Simon allowed six hits and four runs in five-plus innings for the loss and slipped to 10-7. After two quick outs, Anthony Gose drew a walk, then stole second base without a throw.
His game plan on this night was to attack the hitters and he did with a mid-90 m.p.h. fastball that had late life and allowed him to set-up his off-speed pitches, which he didn’t need to rely on as much with the effectiveness of his first pitch. I think Gose should score.
Preston Tucker atoned for not catching the ball in the firth, by tieing the game in the ninth with a solo home run.
HOUSTON (AP) – Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera is off the disabled list and back in the starting lineup.
Ian Kinsler gave Detroit the lead in the fifth following a replay. McHugh rebounded to record seven strikeouts against two walks over seven innings, but exited trailing 1-0.
Ranking first in home runs, Houston has hit 158 this season. Fiers, who was acquired July 30 from Milwaukee, got a no decision after yielding a run in 6 2-3 in his last start at Oakland. Unfortunately, the Tigers had already put up three runs in the top half of the inning. Whether he would have scored on Kinsler’s sharply hit single is up for interpretation, but his speed is why the Tigers held a 1-0 lead for so long tonight.
The Tigers optioned left-hander Kyle Ryan to Triple-A Toledo to make room for Cabrera on the roster.
Astros: OF George Springer (broken right wrist) was cleared to resume baseball activities on Friday, but the Astros still aren’t sure when he’ll come off the disabled list. “Let’s see how it feels tomorrow and we can say something tomorrow”.
