The crash occurred as the bus without passengers began its route between Newark and Dunellen; the other bus was traveling between Irvington and Clifton, NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder said.

One of the buses T-boned the other, almost breaking it in half.
According to NJ Advance Media, one person is dead and at least seven are injured.
In addition to the toll the crash took on those involved, it will also snarl morning rush hour traffic just as the bulk of the commute gets underway. She said she heard a crash “like an explosion” and ran outside.
“We believe that all those passengers will be OK at this time”, said Christopher Trucillo, Chief of Police, New Jersey Transit.
Nine people are still being treated at University Hospital in Newark a day after the accident, spokesman Thaddaeus Diggs told NJ Advance Media. He said one bus appeared to have been mostly empty while the one that was smashed had several people on board.
There were no passengers on the bus being driven by Barthelus, who died at the scene.
The Essex County prosecutor is investigating the crash. Around 6:00 am, the buses crashed into each other, at North Broad St. and Raymond Blvd. The No. 13 bus ended up on its side.

The surviving bus driver, James Roberts, who had been on the job for 35 years, has been released from the hospital, authorities said.

Streets are closed because of the accident, police said. Officials have not commented on the statement.
