At least 10 killed in Baghdad attack

Both attacks come only weeks after a deadly suicide truck bomb explosion killed almost 300 people during Ramadan celebrations in the Iraqi capital.

The death toll from a suicide bomb attack claimed by the Islamic State (IS) in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on Sunday rose to 21 people and 35 others wounded, a police source told Xinhua. Security forces and public areas, mainly in Shiite areas, are one of the most frequent targets for the extremist group, which controls key areas in mainly northern and western Iraq.

The group said it was behind a suicide blast this month which left 292 people dead, one of the largest attacks of its kind since the US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

This latest suicide bombing comes on the heels of the July 3 terror attack in Baghdad, considered the worst in recent history. At least 32 others were wounded.

The bombing took place in an outdoor market, a police officer said.

The fallout from the Karrada attack included the resignation of Iraq’s interior minister, Mohammed Salem al-Ghabban, who stepped aside two days later, citing a lack of “coordination among security systems” as the reason for his departure.

Following it the government had also ordered the security personnel to stop using bogus bomb detectors that have failed to detect and known to be useless for years.
