At least 11 killed by tornadoes in Dallas area

Four people died in a weather-related auto accident in Aitkin County, Minnesota, on Saturday, State Trooper Lt. Tiffani Nielson said.

The death toll following four days of wild weather in the southeastern United States has risen to 22. The front is associated with the winter storm that is unleashing a blizzard in western Texas and eastern New Mexico, extremely heavy rain from eastern Oklahoma to central IL with ice in between.

The emergency manager of Ellis county south of Dallas, Stephanie Parker, posted on twitter: “We have destroyed and damaged homes”. Some parts of the Panhandle could see as many as 14 inches of snow, with sub-zero wind chills and accumulating ice.

With the fatalities in the Dallas area, the death toll from storms that have rampaged through the South in the past week rose above 20.

The tornadoes are the latest result of tumultuous weather conditions across the South, including unusually high temperatures, torrential downpours and snowstorms, officials said.

City officials said: “Five deaths have been confirmed”.

The tornadoes in Dallas, Texas snapped power cables and knocked over pylons leaving the region in darkness.

The emergency manager for a county south of Dallas says some homes have been destroyed and damaged during a fierce storm that spawned tornadoes in the area. Five deaths were reported from Garland, two from Copeville and one from Blue Ridge.

Flash flooding closed roads across Alabama and trapped motorists in rapidly rising waters. Three others, including an infant of unknown age, were found dead in Collin County.

According to Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn, 56 injuries were reported and over 400 homes were affected.

A storm on Christmas Day in 2012 which included several tornadoes damaged homes from Texas to Alabama.

In north Texas, meanwhile, residents hunkered down for what the National Weather Service was calling a “historic blizzard”. “It’s like a nightmare”, said a sobbing resident of Rowlett, in the north of Texas.

“By Sunday morning, the snow, sleet and freezing rain will expand northeast across the southern Plains”, the NWS said.

In addition to snow, icy conditions and strong winds are expected from central Oklahoma up into Kansas, making the roads risky for driving.

Better weather was forecast for the Southeast on Sunday, and temperatures in the eastern third of the country could set numerous records highs, Rubin-Oster said.
