At least 11 killed in Texas storms
Cleanup and recovery efforts were underway in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, on Sunday after tornadoes and powerful storms ripped through the region overnight, killing at least 11 people.

The emergency manager for a county south of Dallas says some homes have been destroyed and damaged during a fierce storm that spawned tornadoes in the area.
The full extent of damage in Texas isn’t yet known along a almost 40-mile stretch from 20 miles south of Dallas to northeast of the city, though there were reports of it blowing the roofs off homes, mangling vehicles, damaging churches, downing power lines and toppling trees.
Lt. Pedro Barineau with the Garland Police Department says eight people died in the Garland storm, according to CNN.
The National Weather Service said the Dallas area was under a tornado warning Saturday. They posted this video to their Youtube and Facebook channels late on Saturday.
Flash flooding closed roads across Alabama and trapped motorists in rapidly rising waters. Weather officials said there were reports of debris falling from the sky onto a highway in nearby DeSoto.
A southwestern IL coroner said three adults and two children drowned when the vehicle they were riding in was swept away and sank in a rain-swollen creek at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday. “Cars look like they’ve been brought back from a war zone and put on display, upside-down”.
Garland police believed that tornado-strength winds late on Saturday were the cause of auto accidents, said Melinda Urbina from the Dallas County Sheriff’s office.
Other parts of Texas and Oklahoma, including El Paso, are under winter storm warnings, while North Texas, central Oklahoma and central Kansas are under a winter storm watch.
Garland resident Pat McMillian said the tornado left neighborhoods in darkness.
“Heavy snowfall amounts of 10 to 18 inches are forecast through Sunday evening across much of western/northwestern Texas, with 18 to 24 inches forecast across portions of New Mexico”. “A variety of unsafe weather conditions will continue across the middle of the country through Sunday”, the National Weather Service said at 0630 GMT.

About 25,000 customers in Texas were without power on Sunday morning, according to local utility companies.
Among the dead was a seven-year-old boy killed when a storm picked up and tossed the vehicle he was travelling in, fire chief Kenny Holbrook told reporters in the town of Holly Springs.
Days of tumultuous weather have led to 35 deaths overall – those in Texas and IL, plus 19 in the Southeast after another body was found Sunday in floodwaters.
Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley will tour areas in his state damaged by floods a day after declaring a state of emergency in all counties affected by excessive rain.

And more extreme weather is forecast for Sunday, with a frigid air mass from Canada bringing a nasty mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain from west Texas to New Mexico.
