This according to the UN’s refugee agency and the International Organization for Migration – after counting arrivals by land and sea in six countries, including Greece and Italy.
On Tuesday, another boat sank off coast of Turkey, leaving 11 refugees dead.
Almost 3,700 people fleeing from Africa and the Middle East have died trying to cross the Mediterranean in the previous year, and another 150,000 have been rescued from sea disasters by the Italians, according to Italy’s Minister of Transportation, Graziano Delrio. Lesbos, with a local population of less than 90,000, temporarily hosted more than 200,000 refugees last month.
About half of the people entering Europe were Syrians, while 20 percent were Afghans and 7 percent Iraqis, the organization said.
The IOM added that human smugglers responsible for moving migrants out of their home countries earned at least $1 billion.
More than 1 million refugees entered Europe during the previous year, the largest movement of migrants in the region since World War II.
NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) – The latest on the continuing flow of refugees and other migrants into Europe.
These trends are mainly a result of protracted conflicts in countries such as Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq as the number of people displaced by wars reaches the highest recorded levels in Western and Central Europe since the former Yugoslav conflict erupted in the 1990s.
It said that over 800,000 refugees and migrants came via the Aegean Sea from Turkey into Greece.
Meanwhile, many migrants and refugees are pressing to be allowed to settle in richer northern countries like Germany and Sweden.
But many continue to push in to Europe, where they hope to gain citizenship through laws created under the 1951 United Nations convention on refugees.
Sweden has announced that it can’t keep up its high acceptance rate, and Merkel recently said her country may be reaching its limit as well.
The IOM says the migrants are still arriving, with 30,411 passing through Greece in the week between 9 and 16 December.
