The Chao Phraya River which runs through the ancient city also flows south to Bangkok, making it a popular river journey with tourists.

Rescuers work frantically to help survivors of the submerged ferry.

It is not yet clear what caused the boat to capsize.

“There are 13 confirmed dead and 33 injured so far”, said Udomsak Khaonoona, disaster prevention chief for the city which is 80 km (50 miles) north of Bangkok.

The double storey boat is believed to have crash into a pillar on the Chao Praya River at 4pm local time, in a report by The Sun.

The casualties and the number of missing people may rise as rescue workers are still trying to identify the number on board and those rescued.
